Lockheed Martin Sponsors Fernbank Aviation Camp

For almost 10 years, Lockheed Martin has partnered with the Fernbank Science Center to present two week-long aviation camps for students in fourth through sixth grade. The program aims to give students a greater understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts while cultivating their imagination and creativity.

Campers learn about technologies like Global Positioning Systems, flight simulators and breakthroughs in aircraft design. Each week of the camp ends with a "Junk Yard War," during which the students are challenged to create aircraft—with flight capabilities—from everyday items that have been discarded.

"We take great pride in sponsoring these two week-long camps at Fernbank each year," says Shan Cooper, vice president and general manager of the Lockheed Martin Marietta Facility. "Supporting this STEM program is fun, but it's also critical to our future as we inspire young people to be future aviators or even Lockheed Martin engineers."

This year's camps take place June 16-27 at the Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta.
