ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was listed as one of the most social airports in the world by Facebook. Hartsfield-Jackson was the second-most-popular airport that people checked into between August and November, according to Facebook.

“We are honored that Facebook has rated us the second-most-social airport,” Aviation General Manager Louis Miller said. “We feel that social media are effective tools to communicate with and engage our customers on a new level.”

Facebook compiled the list of the top 25 airports in the world based on people’s check-ins via Facebook or a third-party location application.

Hartsfield-Jackson’s social media program launched with a YouTube channel in December 2009. Coca-Cola Announces Secret Formula!

It hasn’t been moved in 86 years, but today the secret is out – The Coca-Cola Company has moved the 125-year-old secret formula for Coca-Cola to a new home at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. As the capstone to the 125th anniversary year of Coca-Cola, the Company is sharing the rich history and timeless appeal of its secret formula in a brand new exhibit where visitors can experience the world’s most recognized brand like never before.
For the first time in history, the vault containing the secret formula will be visible to the public in a permanent exhibit titled The Vault of the Secret Formula, opening today at the World of Coca-Cola.
“This is a special day in Coca-Cola history, and the perfect culmination to our 125th anniversary celebrations this year,” said Muhtar Kent, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Coca-Cola Company. “By sharing this secret formula experience with our consumers, we celebrate both the rich history of the brand’s beginnings and the moments of refreshment and happiness to come for future generations. This is yet another way we are recognizing and thanking everyone around the world who has made the Coca-Cola brand what it is today.”
The Company transferred the secret formula to the World of Coca-Cola from a vault at SunTrust Bank in downtown Atlanta where it had been housed since 1925.
“The move of the Coca-Cola secret formula is a historic moment for the Company,” said Phil Mooney, Director of Archives, The Coca-Cola Company. “The Company has always gone to great lengths to protect it and now by safeguarding it at the World of Coca-Cola, we can share its legendary legacy with people around the world.”
After Dr. John S. Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886, the formula was kept a close secret, only shared with a small group and not written down. In 1891, Asa Candler became the sole proprietor of Coca-Cola after purchasing the rights to the business. Then, in 1919, Ernest Woodruff and a group of investors purchased the Company from Candler and his family. To finance the purchase Woodruff arranged a loan and as collateral he provided documentation of the formula by asking Candler’s son to commit the formula to paper. This was placed in a vault in the Guaranty Bank in New York until the loan was repaid in 1925. At that point, Woodruff reclaimed the secret formula and returned it to Atlanta and placed it in the Trust Company Bank, now SunTrust, where it remained until its recent move to the World of Coca-Cola.
Guests to the World of Coca-Cola can feel closer than ever before to the secret formula. At The Vault of the Secret Formula exhibit, visitors will learn about the most closely guarded trade secret in history through an immersive multimedia experience that celebrates the rich history, mythology and intrigue around the secret formula.
While The Coca-Cola Company started with this secret formula 125 years ago, the secret to its success has grown far beyond the formula today.
“Any stakeholder who is part of our global system, from a local community partner in countries around the world to someone who simply loves our brands, is part of our secret to success,” said Kent. “It is this recipe for success that gives us the confidence to fulfill our 2020 Vision: to sustainably grow our business and continue to help build a better world and future for everyone, everywhere.”

Cobb Chamber of Commerce Honors Local Teachers

This October, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 23rd year of Give Our Schools a Hand (GOSH).

Motivating the community to take an active role in Cobb's public school systems, the GOSH program has become one of the largest celebrations in the nation to honor local teachers, and has been since 1988.

GOSH week is an event that brings teachers, students, parents, businesses and the community together. Education is honored through three events: the Handprint Unveiling Ceremony, the Teacher of the Year Breakfast and the Teacher of the Year Pep Rally.

The public is invited to the Marietta Square for the handprint unveiling of the Cobb County and Marietta Teachers of the Year on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in Glover Park.

On Oct. 25, there will be a breakfast and pep rally to honor all Cobb and Marietta Teachers of the Year. It will be held at Roswell Street Baptist Church. The breakfast is by invitation only while the pep rally (beginning at 11 a.m.) is open to the public.

Bringing GOSH week to a close on Nov. 7, Ed Voyles Automotive Group will present the Teacher of the Year (elementary, middle and high school) a free one-year car lease during the Cobb Chamber's First Monday Breakfast.

Despite Recession Atlanta Grows

On Aug. 11, the Atlanta Regional Commission reported that although the recession is hindering the city's growth, Atlanta is adding new residents.

Between April 1, 2010 and April 1 of this year (2011), the region grew by 34,550 according to ARC estiamtes. Compared with the boom between 2000 and 2007, this is the third year in a row that the metro area has experienced slower growth, but still spectacular for these tough economic times.

"Although slower, this pace is still impressive in the face of the economic pressures we face," ARC Chairman Tad Leithead said. "This gives us a chance to catch our breath while we plan for the more rapid growth we project."

It's no surprise that Altanta is one of the fastest growing cities. With more job opportunities slowly but surely emerging, and with plenty to do (the Georgia Aqaurium, Fox Theatre, Falcons games and more), there is a definite added appeal to the region.

The county that leads the growth chart is Gwinnett County with 8,799 residents being added during the next year. In second place is Fulton County (the home of the city of Atlanta), with an increase of 7,619 residents. Third place goes to Cherokee County, adding 4,154 and then Henry County, adding 3,878.

Now home to more than 4.1 million people, the Atlanta region is now larger than 24 states, according to U.S. Census data.

RockTenn Brings More Than 500 Jobs to Metro Atlanta

RockTenn, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development, announced the consolidation of its Chicago and Metro St. Louis operations to Gwinnett County, Metro Atlanta. The company's increased presence in Gwinnett will bring 500 new jobs to the community and represents five million dollars in capital investment for Gwinnett.

"RockTenn expanding its corporate headquarters here is big news-not only because 500 new jobs will be created, but also because this top Fortune 500 company has chosen Georgia as the best place to keep doing business for years to come," said Governor Nathan Deal. "RockTenn currently employs more than 1,100 Georgians and helping to secure the future of those existing jobs with this investment is just as important as adding the new ones."

RockTenn will lease approximately 68,000 square feet of space at their Duluth facility. Located at 3950 Shackleford Road, a Duke Realty Property, the building will house some of the new positions being created and some personnel will transfer from RockTenn's Norcross corporate campus. All of the positions are professional service positions. Although not a Fortune 500 company this year, RockTenn's acquisition will position them for the coveted corporate listing in 2012. This will make Gwinnett's fourth Fortune 500 company to either expand or relocate in the last three years, behind AGCO, NCR and the relocation of Asbury Automotive's headquarters from Manhattan in 2008.

CNBC just announced America’s Top States for Business 2011 and Georgia is one of the leaders of the pack. Listed this year at 4th, this is up from 10th in 2010. Georgia has been a great place to do business for years, and the job growth resulting from business growth is why the Atlanta real estate market was hot for so many years!

Georgia scored a 1,513 out of 2,500 points in CNBC’s study, which considers a variety of factors that measure competitiveness. The National Association of Manufacturers and the Council on Competitiveness gave input to the study.

Peachtree Road Race: Where to Watch

One hundred fifty thousand people cram the sidewalks of Peachtree Road to enjoy the world’s largest 10K. If you’re going to be one of them, you’ll need to pick your spot and pick it early. Our recommendations: Find a place where you can obtain refreshments, shade and, of course, a good view of the course. Here’s where to start:

Mile One

The place where it all starts—the center of Buckhead shopping. If you’re watching the race in this part of town, you’ll get to see the monstrous start crowds. Cool off while your friends line up at the start by having a bagel and an iced java at a local coffee house, or scope out all the luxury shopping you can do later.

Mile Two

Top recommendations for getting the true crowd feel are watching the race where West Paces Ferry, Peachtree and Roswell roads meet. Further down mile two, you’ll find The Cathedral of St. Philip, known for hosting race-day events and for being the site where Dean Sam Candler sprinkles Peachtree runners with holy water.

Mile Three

Shop and watch. Good locations for watching mile three of the race are at the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center and Piedmont Hospital, where music is playing while runners conquer “Cardiac Hill.”

Mile Four

In mile four, it’s all about the business of getting down the course toward the finish line and recovering from the workout of “Cardiac Hill.” This section attracts spectators from the surrounding residential areas and from the local dining and drinking establishments.

Mile Five

The race really becomes a spectator sport thronged by massive crowds after Peachtree crosses I-85 heading south toward the Woodruff Arts Center and the restaurants of Colony Square and Midtown.

Mile Six (and the .2)

Positioned here, you can watch all the race excitement and still walk
to the family meeting area in the meadow at Piedmont Park to congratulate family and friends on their accomplishment. The corner of Peachtree and 10th streets is a popular area for race watching and festivities. As you head to the park, there are a number of shaded areas for watching the runners, as well as numerous trendy Midtown restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the race.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Announces $52 million in Grants for Georgia

Things are looking good for Atlanta real estate. Last week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that it will provide $52 million dollars in grants to Georgia in order to support community development and increase the supply of affordable housing.

Areas receiving grant money include the counties of Cherokee, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett as well as Atlanta, Rome, Savannah and Augusta. Aside from community development and creating affordable housing, the grant money will also aid in support long-term disaster recovery and assisting the homeless.

Money for the grants comes from the Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnerships, Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS and Emergency Shelter Grants.

Atlanta: The Next Hollywood

While it may never really live up to the star-studded Hollywood, Georgia is quickly becoming a major hub for the film and TV production industry. Since July 2010, more than 270 projects have been shot in the area.

Movies include “X-Men: First Class,” the remake of “Footloose,” “Wanderlust” starring Jennifer Anniston and Paul Rudd, “American Pie 4: American Reunion” and “The Change-Up,” which stars Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman.

TV shows include AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” MTV’s “Teen Wolf” and the Discovery Channel’s “Auction Kings.”

And a metro Atlanta home is making quite a name for itself. The most expensive home currently on the market in metro Atlanta appears in “Zombieland” and the upcoming film “Stooges,” a Farrelly brothers remake of “Three Stooges.” Its extravagant pool was even featured on HGTV’s “Million Dollar Rooms.” It’s currently on sale for $19.9 million.

According to the Metro Atlanta Chamber's Business Recruitment Blast, which features new locations and expansions by companies and recent business rankings for Atlanta, opportunities are continuing to develop, especially with Georgia’s solar energy. In May, Gov. Nathan Deal signed a legislation which would allow the solar energy program to receive $5 million annually for projects.

Some companies that recently located to Georgia or are expanding include Novelis, an aluminum products manufacturer and recycler, Porsche Cars North America, Arbor Pharmaceuticals, Lowe’s and The Boss Group.

Modern Exhibit Opens at the High Museum

A new art exhibit is coming to Atlanta for the summer! From June 4 to August 21 you can see “Modern by Design” at the High Museum of Art. The exhibit, which features 20^th century modern design, is part of a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Nearly 150 objects from modern designers and artists will be included. Items include a robot named Abby, a climbing wall and art created in 1934 from machines and machine accessories.

Admission is $18 for adults and $11 for children ages six to 17. Children less than six years old are free, and admission for senior citizens and students is $15.

AirTran Introduces Non-stop Flight From Atlanta to Bermuda

AirTran Airways’ new daily nonstop service from Atlanta, Georgia to Hamilton, Bermuda is paving the way for bringing together Buckhead and Bermuda. The Buckhead Coalition, a nonprofit organization in the affluent area of Buckhead, is aiming to create a “Sister Community” agreement between the two areas.

“This new travel service is of real economic value to both cities, and we plan to nurture our relationship with this delightful island,” said Sam Massell, Coalition President and a former Atlanta mayor. “We both are major tourist destinations and have fine hotels and restaurants, excellent shopping and a common attitude of good will.”

On May 26, a delegation from the Coalition will travel to Hamiltion, Bermuda to discuss the concept while meeting with professional counterparts. At a later time, participating members from Bermuda will travel to Buckhead to further explore negotiations.

Buckhead Coalition is an influential nonprofit civic association, much like a chamber of commerce for this affluent northern quadrant of the city of Atlanta. Its mission is to “nurture the quality of life and help coordinate an orderly growth.”

MARC Awards Scholarships to High School Seniors

The Metro Atlanta Relocation Council recently announced the recipients of its first scholarship fund. The $1,500 college scholarship, which was offered to students who relocated to Atlanta during high school, was awarded to two seniors in the counties of Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett.

Forty-five students from 33 high schools applied for the scholarship. The award, which was based on the student’s transcript, extra-curricular activities and a written essay, was made possible through a grant from the Foundation for the Worldwide Employee Relocation Council and is awarded annually.

The two winners include Daniel “Quinn” van Zanten from Carrollton High School, who will be attending Auburn University, and Jessica “Presley” Davis from Lambert High School, who will attend the University of Georgia.

A few weeks ago, we headed to Houston, Tx. to the ASA Express Jet corporate headquarters. The company was moving more than 100 people to the Atlanta area and needed help. The HR manager was overwhelmed in trying to help the employees prepare for their move.

It’s always a difficult thing — moving. Some people were excited to be moving to beautiful Atlanta, Ga. Others were just resigned to the fact that this is how it goes when you work in the Airline Industry. And others weren’t happy at all to be moving their families.

We spent the day in a conference room with people coming and going—working with their schedules as they had the opportunity to meet with us between shifts and on breaks. In particular, I remember the gentleman who didn’t care at all where they moved, or what it was like. He’d brought his wife along and just wanted her to be happy; she’d been through this before, and it’s always hardest on the wife and kids.

We sat with a copy of our magazine and looked over a map of the metro area. During the course of our conversation, we discussed different neighborhoods, and pulled up schools on the web site. She left with a smile on her face and it seemed like she really felt as though someone had been of help to her in a time when she needed it.

Over the course of our visit, we discovered these individuals, of course, had many different concerns. Some of them needed a Realtor, and we were happy to help. Some needed rental ideas, because they had to sell their home first and there was no way they could buy a home immediately. Then there was the family that had 2 very large dogs, a cat, a fish and other pets too numerous to mention. They wanted space, some land perhaps, or at least a big yard.

We spent the entire day talking to each person and helping with their individual needs. By the end, we were a bit exhausted and had almost lost our voices, but there was a sense of accomplishment. We’d been of service in a very real and personal way to actual people moving to Atlanta—not just a number and a name of an employee being moved by their company. It was a great feeling and we hope to do it again very soon.

MARC Announces a New Scholarship Fund

Thanks to the Metro Atlanta Relocation Council (MARC), high school seniors can now apply for a $1,500 college scholarship. This award goes to senior students in the counties of Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett who relocated to the area sometime between grades 9 and 12. Based on the student's relocation, grades, extra-curricular activities and a written essay, the scholarship is a one-time award. To be considered for the award, high schoolers must currently be a senior with good standing at an Atlanta-area high school, have relocated more than 50 miles between grades 9 and 12, and currently have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship is also open to any student in a county bordering the four listed counties. The application deadline is March 31. Winners will be announced April 20. City of Atlanta growth

The Atlanta Development Authority released a recent report on the growth of the City of Atlanta.

Atlanta will add 104,870 people during the next 20 years

From 2010 to 2020, the city of Atlanta population is forecasted to increase by 61,030, or 11.3 percent, to 599,670. From 2020 to 2030, the population is forecasted to continue to increase by an additional 43,660 persons, or 7.3 percent, to 643,330.

The city will see the median age of its population increase from 33.3 in 2010 to 39.8 in 2030. This can be attributed to two factors: locally born 18- to 24-year-olds leaving the city to continue their education or take a job, and the aging of the city's baby boomer population into their 60s and 70s.

The proportion of Atlanta's population age 19 and younger will decline from 23.3 percent in 2010 to 20.2 percent in 2030. However, the number of children will increase slightly from 125,440 to 130,050 - an additional 4,610 children.

The 65-years-and-older population in the city will double in the next 20 years
