Fire up your feet for school!
Seven schools in metro Atlanta took home awards in the Fire
Up Your Feet challenge that promotes physical activity and wellness programs. It
tracks the physical activity of school students, staff and their families and
even gives schools resources to fund-raise in a healthy way. Launched in 2013, the
program encourages contributors to stay driven in a fun and friendly
environment. It even takes place in eight states and the District of Columbia.
People that participate do so by keeping record of their
physical activity during the month-long challenge. The Fire Up Your Feet online
tracker keeps note of all of the progress that they make. Awards for the
program include most overall participating, highest weekly activity tracking
numbers, most walking, most bicycling and more.
More than $290,000 has been awarded to participating schools
since Fire Up Your Feet started. The program not only unites the school community
and gets everyone focused on the goal of healthy minds and bodies, but
participants also get regular physical activity, which is extremely good for
them.
Being such an engaging program, it gets parents, students,
teachers and school staff more physically active before, during and after
school. It also encourages walking schools bus programs, the purchase of bike
racks, traffic safety countermeasures to help promote more walking and biking, incentives
for Walking Wednesdays, safety vests and more.
The top prize was $2,150 awarded in metro Atlanta, and the
winner was Morrow Elementary School in Clayton County. But, they weren’t the
only school to win cash prizes. Six other ones won:
·
Briarlake Elementary School in Decatur
·
Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta
·
Ellis School of Atlanta in Decatur
·
Mountain View Elementary School in Marietta
·
Peachtree Academy in Conyers
·
State Bridge Crossing Elementary School in Johns
Creek
