Flowery Branch, Georgia’s South Hall Middle School is one of eleven schools across the United States that was awarded a HeartSine Automated
External Defibrillator package for winning a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) poster
contest.
To qualify, students from each school had to make one poster
that addressed one or more of the topics prompted by the SCA. The topics were:
symptoms of SCA, surviving SCA and preparing for SCA. The decision process for
the winners was based off of teamwork effort, visual appeal, design originality
and SCA awareness message clarity. The poster had to be created completely by
the students in the school with no help whatsoever from an adult.
The leading cause of death on school property in the U.S is
SCA, and responses to this contest were very reassuring. The importance of AED
was really focused on, and children were able to learn and stress the symptoms
of sudden cardiac arrest while discovering the impact of having an AED on
school property and at sporting events.
Designed to raise awareness of SCA, this competition gave children
elementary through high school age the chance to win a defibrillator package
that can be placed anywhere on school grounds, school buses and are readily available
during sporting events.
The competition was sponsored by Project ADAM, an
organization dedicated to raising awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and
HeartSine Technologies, the importance of AEDs and creating emergency action
plans for schools, and HeartSine Technologies.
Each complete CPR/AED packages consisted of a HeartSine Samaritan
PAD 350P AED with a carrying case and Pad-Pak ™, a wall case and CPR and AED
training for up to 12 people at each school.
