This spring, more than 65 schools in the metro Atlanta area competed in the Fire Up Your Feet Activity Challenge, a contest that receives its funding from Kaiser Permanente. During this month-long challenge, which drew more than 1,700 participants, including students, families, and staff, individuals kept track of their physical activity using an online tracker. Participating schools received a total of $4,500 in prize money, accepting awards that ranged from most overall participation to most bike activity. In line with the program's mission of promoting a healthy lifestyle, earnings will go toward strengthening the physical activity and wellness programs in these schools. For example, Challenge Awards will help to support walking school bus programs, the purchase of bike racks, and traffic safety countermeasures, to name a few. In addition to Burgess-Peterson Elementary School in Atlanta, which won the top prize of $1,200, other winning schools include:
- Peachtree Academy in Conyers
- Taylor Road Middle School in Alpharetta
- Chestnut Charter Elementary in Dunwoody
- Evansdale Elementary in Doraville
- Hightower Elementary in Doraville
- Alexsander Academy in Alpharetta
- Dresden Elementary in Chamblee
KNOWAtlanta extends a warm congratulations to all of these schools and to all participants of the Fire Up Your Feet Activity Challenge!
All K-8 public, private, or charter schools in the metro Atlanta area are eligible to enter the next challenge, which will be held on October 1-31. Visit fireupyourfeet.org to sign up.
