Highland Park Now Open for Sales Along the Beltline

Any of you who have been in Atlanta for a while or have been keeping an eye on the city for near-future relocation will know about the Beltline, an amazing project that has taken an old railway and transformed it into a 22-mile trail that caters to walkers, runners and bikers. The project's goal to help get some of Atlanta's traffic under control and get more residents to be active has been noted by the New York Times recently.

Now, homes are available for sale along the east-side trail of the Beltline, ideal for those looking to bike their commute to work or just soak up the benefits of the largest, most wide-ranging urban redevelopment and mobility projects currently underway in the United States. This sustainable project is providing a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit by re-using 22-miles of historic railroad corridors circling downtown and connecting 45 neighborhoods directly to each other.

Onsite sales are now open at Highland Park, the highly anticipated new John Wieland neighborhood ideally located adjacent to the Atlanta Beltline off of Highland Avenue. The neighborhood’s sought-after location where Inman Park meets Old Fourth Ward, its direct connection to the Beltline’s Eastside Trail and its innovative portfolio of new luxury townhomes have made it one of the area’s most talked about new additions and already proven to be in high demand.  Highland Park’s first two building releases have already sold out and new homes in the third building will be released next with prices starting in the high $300s.
Highland Park will offer a diverse portfolio of new townhomes combining luxury and easy low-maintenance. The neighborhood’s first offerings range in size from 2025 to 2325+ square feet and offer bright, open living spaces, finished terrace level bonus rooms, two-car garages and, in some cases, views overlooking the Beltline’s green space. Highland Park’s newest release also includes the addition of larger townhome plans up to 3400+ square feet featuring rooftop sky terraces with prices ranging into the $500s and $600s. All new townhomes at Highland Park will be protected by the exclusive Wieland 5 Year – 20 Year Warranty, the industry’s best. New home buyers also enjoy the opportunity to personalize their new home at John Wieland’s exclusive New Home Design Studio.
For more information on Highland Park, visit the onsite sales center open daily, call 404-223-0011 or visit jwhomes.com/highlandpark online.

2013 Off to a Great Start in Atlanta–Retail, Jobs, Expansion

RETAIL
Beginning the retail and advancing to major corporation reboots, rebuilds and remodels, 2013 is off to a very promising start only a month and a half in. A slow-but-steady, fragile recovery has been underway in the Atlanta retail market, with industry experts expecting 2013 to be a year of continued improvement.

The 324 million-square-foot Atlanta retail market absorbed 1.3 million square feet of space during the first three quarters of 2012, according to a recent report from the Atlanta office of Cushman & Wakefield of Georgia Inc., which notes that “Increasing tenant demand led to a fourth straight quarter in net occupancy gains for the first time since the third quarter of 2008.”
JOBS
Communications equipment firm ViaSat Inc. will add about 275 jobs at its metro Atlanta campus. The expansion will more than double the company's local workforce.
Carlsbad, Calif.-based ViaSat (NASDAQ: VSAT) will lease a new $10 million, 60,000 square foot office building at its Breckinridge Park campus in Duluth, which is also the company's regional headquarters.
State Farm is seeking about 200,000 square feet of office space and may have zeroed in on the Hammond Exchange building in Dunwoody, Atlanta Business Chronicle has learned.
The planned expansion comes six months after State Farm said it will bring at least 500 jobs to the Central Perimeter business district.
It doesn't stop there. A 280-acre film complex is being planned near Fayetteville, a project that could employ up to 1,500 at full capacity.
Rivers Rock, LLC, representing a group of Atlanta-area investors, plans to build what they claim would be the largest film production complex in metro Atlanta. The investment group said it is in discussions with London-based Pinewood Studios Group to manage and operate the studio complex.
Pinewood Studios is best known a the home of the Superman and James Bond film series.
EXPANSION
Bitcoin payment processor BitPay will relocate its headquarters to Atlanta, where it will open a software development center.
Bitcoin is a digital currency that is the most widely used alternative currency. All bitcoins converted at the current market price would be worth more than $100 million, according to Wikipedia.
Emory Healthcare will invest $312 million in expanding its flagship hospital on Clifton Road.
The health system previously announced plans to build a new 9-story clinical tower, to accomodate an increase in patient volumes.
While Emory declined to disclose the number of jobs that might be created, based on industry estimates, a 200-bed hospital would employ about 1,000.
The tower, which will be build across the hospital, will have 210 inpatient beds — a combination of new and existing beds that will relocate from Emory University Hospital.

Georgia's Annual Travel Media Marketplace

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced today that Georgia’s Lake Country will host the state’s 2013 Georgia Travel Media Marketplace event May 16 - 18. Nestled on the shores of Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair, up to 30 travel writers from the United States and Canada will explore Eatonton, Greensboro, Madison and Milledgeville. Travel writers will also have the opportunity to meet with representatives from around the state during the marketplace to learn about the state’s tourism destinations, attractions and events.

Just an hour east of Atlanta, Georgia’s Lake Country is nestled in the four neighboring communities of Eatonton, Greensboro, Madison and Milledgeville. These communities offer more than 10 golf courses, two expansive lakes with more than 15,000 acres of water and shopping experiences from antiques to designer brands. Picturesque downtown squares are reminiscent of days gone by offering detailed history of this region. The beautiful Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair offer a variety of outdoor activities including watersports, fishing and cool morning breezes.

Travel media will meet with the host communities as well as Georgia’s regional tourism representatives, regional travel associations and Georgia’s State Parks, during the Marketplace. The writers will then depart on one of three themed familiarization tours around the state through May 21.

Travel Media Marketplace is jointly hosted by the Georgia Tourism Division and the host communities to showcase Georgia’s tourism assets first hand. Past Marketplace events have been held in Savannah; Athens; Macon; Atlanta; Hiawassee; Augusta; LaGrange and Coweta County; Blue Ridge and Ellijay; and Statesboro and Vidalia.

Travel writers interested in participating in this event can email Stefanie Paupeck atspaupeck@georgia.org for an application.

Puppy Love and Animal Mosaiculture, oh my!

A menagerie of magical creatures casts an enchanting spell over the Atlanta Botanical Garden during May through October with Imaginary Worlds Plants Larger Than Life – 19 monumental living sculptures of fantasy and delight.

The exhibition of mosaiculture – the horticultural art of creating giant topiary-like sculptures using thousands of bedding plants to carpet steel forms – is the creative genius of International Mosaiculture of Montreal. The nonprofit group has staged wildly successful exhibitions of its work around the world, and the Atlanta showing will be the first major exhibition of its kind in the United States.

“The scale of this work, the imagination, and the excitement knowing we will be the first-ever U.S. botanical garden to host one of their exhibitions stands to place this event on par with our blockbuster showing in 2004 of Dale Chihuly’s glass sculptures,” said Mary Pat Matheson, the Garden’s president and CEO.

The sculptures – ranging up to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide – include a gazing unicorn, a friendly ogre, a pair of gigantic cobras, a group of enchanting rabbits, and a couple of flighty butterflies. The largest piece, a 25-foot-tall representation of a goddess emerging from the earth, will greet visitors in the Cascades Garden.

Each sculpture is a living, sophisticated evolution of the traditional “stuffed topiary” technique. Thousands of meticulously groomed annuals are planted into soil-and-sphagnum moss filled netting covering the steel forms – hidden works of artisanship themselves – to carpet the skeletons in colorful patterns. Complex irrigation systems beneath the surface of the sculptures allow the plants to grow – and the creatures to flourish – in Atlanta’s summer heat.

Keep the Valentine's Day love momentum going and let the Westin Buckhead Atlanta show you a good time with a “Puppy Love” party on Saturday, February 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. to benefit the 1873 Society Club, the Atlanta Humane Society’s junior board. Enjoy specialty cocktails and light bites, including cupcakes from Smallcakes, while mixing and mingling at the pet-friendly hotel in the heart of Buckhead. Pet-friendly libations (water) and nibbles (dog treats) will be provided for the pups. Festivities will include Pet Stylist Anais Hayden – who recently appeared on Anderson Cooper’s daytime show – styling the pups and she will have her dog painted in a Valentine theme design using safe vegan dye, grooming from Atlanta Dog Spa and a doggy kissing booth with a foster dog from the Atlanta Humane Society. Proceeds from the cash bar and $5 raffle will benefit the 1873 Society Club. The event is free and open to the public.

Mt. Bethel's "You Fed Me" Initiative

Mt. Bethel Christian Academy (MBCA) has launched a new service initiative called “You Fed Me,” with an ambitious goal to pack 100,000 meals for hungry children in one day.  Under the direction of Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief agency, the school, with students in grades kindergarten through eighth, engaged every student packing meals along side faculty, staff and 75 parent and grandparent volunteers on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Our community will be assembling 100,000 nutritious, potentially life-saving meals for hungry children around the world,” said Jim Callis, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s Head of School.  “A service initiative of this scale will require 100% involvement from our student body, our faculty and many more from our parent and grandparent community.” According to Stop Hunger Now organizers, never before has a school endeavored to accomplish such an ambitious goal. “By serving others, our students learn to think beyond themselves and realize that as a community we can make a difference in the lives of children that may not enjoy the same quality of life that we experience.” continued Callis.
The “You Fed Me” campaign takes its name from the passage in Matthew 25 where God tells us that when we feed someone who is hungry, it is as though we are feeding Him.  Each meal, which costs twenty-five cents, contains rice, vegetables, soy protein and 21 essential vitamins and nutrients in a dehydrated form making them easy to store and ship.  At a cost of $25,000, MBCA will be funding this campaign through contributions from the school community.
Throughout the year, students in every grade level at MBCA support missions both locally and internationally such as Georgia’s Make-a-Wish Foundation, MUST Ministries, Operation Homefront, and the Community Hope School in Namibia, Africa.
