Northside Hospital receives almost $160K for Cancer Screenings

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Northside Hospital has received a nearly $160,000 grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Atlanta Affiliate. The award to the hospital’s Cancer Institute will help pay for screening mammograms and other breast diagnostic procedures for women who cannot afford them.

As a National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Center, Northside offers a range of services for every aspect of breast care, and more cases of breast cancer are treated at Northside than any other community hospital in the Southeast.

Komen Atlanta’s grant program funds community programs that provide vital breast care services to women who are medically uninsured and underserved.

Of the $158,803 given to Northside in 2013, $142,456 will go toward helping qualified applicants receive screening mammograms and breast diagnostic services including diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, biopsies and more to women in need. The remaining $16,347 in grant funds will help Northside provide screening mammograms in partnership with Komen Atlanta’s Worship in Pink Program, which encourages Atlanta's churches, mosques and synagogues to spread the life-saving message of early detection.

This is the eleventh year that Northside has received grant money from Komen Atlanta, with funds totaling more than $696,000. In 2012, 875 women were served by Northside’s Komen funds. Breast cancer was detected in five women, who otherwise may have gone untreated.
